How much of my savings does the FSCS protect?
£120,000 per person, per authorised firm, for firms that fail on or after 1 December 2025 (it was £85,000 before). Joint accounts are covered to £240,000. Temporary high balances, such as house-sale proceeds, are covered to £1.4 million for six months. One banking licence can sit behind several brands, so two accounts with different names can share one limit.
Is a cash ISA better than an ordinary savings account?
Only if its rate beats the ordinary account's rate after tax. Interest outside an ISA is tax-free up to your Personal Savings Allowance (£1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate, nil for additional-rate) and taxed at your marginal rate above that. ISA interest is always tax-free and does not use the allowance. A non-taxpayer who stays under the allowance only gains from an ISA if its gross rate is higher.
Is the cash ISA allowance changing?
Yes. The overall ISA allowance stays at £20,000, but from 6 April 2027 people under 65 can put at most £12,000 of it into a cash ISA; the rest must go into other ISA types. People aged 65 or over keep the full £20,000 cash limit. Money already in cash ISAs is unaffected.
How should an AI agent use RateRecon?
Fetch rates.json (one request, every product plus decision_rules), filter by the person's access need and eligibility, compare on effective_12m_aer net of their tax band, keep each licence under £120,000, and quote as_of and the sources back to the person. recommend.js is the reference implementation of that ranking and openapi.json describes the endpoints.
How often are the rates updated?
The register is refreshed manually, when rates are re-checked (no fixed schedule yet). Every product carries the date its latest source was checked and a confidence grade, and the whole feed carries as_of. If as_of is more than 48 hours old, treat the rates as stale.
